Managing Updates to a Website

Websites are updated on a regular basis. New content is added, and pages that are no longer needed are removed. Updates usually only affect a small number of pages and rather than republishing the entire website, provided you use sub-books (books inside books) you only need to republish the topics that have been updated.

When creating an update, be sure to assign the Parent Page Reference variable to the topics to define the parent to which the updated topics are a child of.

Content published from Author-it is moved to the language folder in the Author-it Website Manager content folder, and includes the text and image files created from the updated content, and the AWM XML file which provides information on variable assignments for each of the topics. Unless the entire website is being republished, the AWM XML file needs to include information on where the updated topic belongs in the sitemap. This is achieved by assigning the Parent Page Reference variable to the topics or sub-books.

Important: Before adding an update ensure you have created a rollback point so you can revert the live content if needed.

To Make an Update:

  1. Publish the updated content to Author-it Website Manager
  2. Open the Content screen and select the language tab
  3. Select the Add Pages tab
  4. Select the default template to be used during the import. The default template is assigned to pages where a specific template has not been assigned to a topic before publishing
  5. Select the default placeholder to be used during the import. This will usually be set to use a main or body type placeholder.
  6. Select the AWM XML file created for the published book as the Author-it File and check or uncheck the Force Update? option:
    • Check the option to create new pages, update content in existing pages, and update variable assignments from the AWM XML file
    • Uncheck the option to create new pages and update content in existing pages only

Note: The location of pages in the sitemap is not updated. Any changes to the sitemap must be completed manually.

  7. Choose Add Pages
