Applying a Style To Text

Applying a paragraph or character style will change the formatting of the selected paragraphs or characters to the defined style.

There are differences between a paragraph and character style. A paragraph style is the underlying style that is applied to one or more paragraphs, and will change both character and paragraph formatting properties. A character style is applied on top of the paragraph style to one or more selected characters and will only change character formatting properties.

Tip

You can use the Styles Toolbar to list all the styles you use frequently and just click the style you want, instead of having to select it from the list.

Styles that you have applied to text using the character or paragraph drop-down lists are displayed in the recently used list (which is displayed during the current session, and cleared when you close Author-it).

Applying Styles

When you select text, or the cursor is within a word, the style is shown in the character or paragraph selector. In the drop-down list the style and sub-folder (if used) are highlighted.

To Apply a Paragraph or Character Style:

  1. Open the topic in the Editor and select the Edit ribbon.
  2. Select the text you want to change:
    • If applying a paragraph style, position the cursor in the paragraph you want to change, or if you want to change more than one paragraph, select the paragraphs you want to change.
    • If applying a character style, select the characters you want to change.
  3. Choose the style from the paragraph or character drop-down list or from the Styles toolbar.
