Understanding How Author-it Determines Focus

When you're using Author-it, the focus affects where objects are stored. You'll find that being aware of the focus soon becomes second nature.

When you create new objects they are stored in the folder that currently has the focus (that is, the folder you have selected in the Library Explorer) - so long as you have permission to create objects in that folder. If you are modifying a book by adding new objects they will be added to the folder with the focus, which may not be the folder containing the parent, or object being modified. If objects are added to the wrong folder you can easily move them.
