Working with Books

The Book represents the content and structure of a document. This section describes working with the Book object.

The Book Contents pane has several states. The following descriptions are based on how you would see the book when you opened it:

  • Available for Use: The book's content pane can be viewed, but topics and other objects in the book's structure cannot be moved or deleted. The book is in this state when it is first opened, and no other users are editing the book's content pane.

While the book is available for all users the closed padlock is displayed. When this button is active you can select the option to put a lock on the book so other users cannot make any alterations.

    Book Available

  • Edit Mode: You can change the book's structure, for example, adding or removing topics, moving topics to a new location, adding or removing an Index or Table of Contents. When the book is in edit mode the editing buttons on the book contents toolbar are available. Only one user can put the book into edit mode at any time, if anyone else opens the book they will see the message that the book is currently in use.

While the book is in edit mode the open padlock is displayed. When this button is active you can select the option to unlock the book, or take the book out of edit mode (where availability is limited to your editing session only), and make it available to other users again.

    Book in Edit Mode

  • Locked: The book is in the locked state when another user has put the book into edit mode, in this case a message is displayed telling you who is currently using the book. You can view the book's content pane, but topics and other objects in the book's structure cannot be moved or deleted. The refresh button is available while the book is locked, this enables you to continue checking the book's status and find out when it becomes available again for all users.

    Book Read Only

  • Read Only: Books open in a read only state if you do not have permissions to modify them. You can view the book's structure but you cannot make any changes, for example, adding, deleting, or moving any of the objects. Again, only the refresh button is available, this time enabling you to update any changes made by other users.
