Working With Embedded Topics
With Author-it you can insert an "embedded" topic into another "container" topic. Any topic can be an embedded topic, subject to these rules:
- An embedded topic can contain graphics and hypertext links. Any links from the embedded topic will work, but links to the embedded topic and index entries involving the embedded topic do not currently work.
- The last paragraph marker does not become part of the embedded topic. This means that a topic can be embedded inside a paragraph in the container topic, and it will use the formatting of that paragraph.
- A topic can contain any number of embedded topics as well as ordinary paragraphs and objects.
- An embedded topic can contain other embedded topics.
- An embedded topic can be 1 or more table rows. This allows you to make tables in the container topic that are built from several embedded topics and can also contain specific table rows that are not embedded.
- You cannot embed a topic into itself, and if a topic is embedded into any descendant of itself, that instance will be ignored during publishing of your document's outputs.
- Any numbered lists in the embedded topic will adjust automatically to the numbering sequence in the container topic.
- Changes that you make to the embedded topic are reflected in all topics containing it.
- When you are working in the container topic you cannot modify the content or formatting of the embedded topic (the editing commands are disabled when your cursor is inside the embedded content). The "embedded topic" must be opened before its content can be edited. Carefully consider the different places that the topic may appear when you make changes.
- If you press the DELETE key anywhere inside the embedded topic, you will be prompted to remove it from the container topic.
