New Variant

Available when you select a standard object (without variants) or a primary object (with variants).

Opens the Create Variant window so you can create a new variant from the selected object, and apply the variant criteria as metadata.

Make Variant

Available when you select a standard object.

Opens the Convert to Variant window so you can make the selected object a variant of another object, and apply the variant criteria as metadata. Select the [...] button to open the Author-it Quick Search window and then locate the object you want to make the selected object a variant of.

Edit Variant

Available when you select a variant object.

Opens the Edit Variant window so you can modify the selected variant object's criteria and update its metadata.

Remove Variant

Available when you select a variant object.

Removes the variant link between the selected variant object and its primary object. The object retains its metadata assignments, but is now treated as a standard object.

Assign Criteria

Available when you select a publishing profile or a standard object.

Assign criteria to a publishing profile to create a customized profile, or use it to assign criteria to an object without creating a variant link to a primary object. Use this option to view an object in the book but exclude it from the published output.
