Creating a New Variant Object in the Book Editor

You can create new variants while you are working with a filtered book. When you create the new variant the criteria used by the book is automatically applied to the new variant. You can use the same criteria or change the criteria.

To Create a New Variant in the Book:

  1. Open a book in the Editor. Choose the criteria in the book filter, then choose Apply to update the book contents.
  2. Select the topic you want to create a variant of, then right-click and choose New Variant.
  3. The criteria window is displayed with the current filter applied. Update the criteria if required, then choose OK to create the new variant. When the new variant is created it is added to the same folder as the parent object. However, the criteria applied to the object decides if it is swapped into the book:
    • If the variant criteria applied to the new object match the current book filter, the object is swapped into the book.

Important: Double-click on the variant topic in the contents pane to open the new topic in the Editor.

    • If the variant criteria is different from the current book filter, the variant is created in the folder but not swapped into the book.
