Using Tables and Merging Cells to Control Indentation

An alternative to creating numerous indented styles, is to use Tables (without borders) and merge the cells to control your indentations. This is particularly useful, when the indent may vary according to the text, and it also works across all output formats.

For example, we have used this approach in the Choosing a Folder Structure topic.

To Use Tables to Control Indentation:

1. Add a table with the desired number of columns and rows (for the example above, we have used 3 columns as we want three levels of indentation).
2. Drag the column borders so the indents are positioned where you want

   

3. Select the cells of the first row, and choose the Merge Cells button on the Tables Toolbar so the text can flow into the entire row.
4. Repeat with the remaining rows. For the second row, you would select the last two cells, and not the entire row.
