Localizing Templates and Objects Directly in Author-it

Provided you have a good working knowledge of Author-it and a good understanding of the language you are translating into, there are some objects that are easily translated directly in Author-it.

These changes should be made in the Target Library, not your Source Library.

For example, let's look at the Hypertext Link object Jump Template. It contains the text see and on page, which is then used by all Hypertext Link objects based on that template. That text won't make much sense to a non-English audience, so needs to be translated.

To Translate an Object Directly in the Target Library:

  1. Open the Target Library in Author-it.
  2. Locate and open the object you want to localize.
  3. Translate the publishable content from English text...

    ...into localized text...

    Cross Reference - French

  4. Select OK to save the object.

Note: Many non-topic object properties that need translation are inherited from the template they are based on and cannot be changed directly. To change these properties, you'll need to edit the object template. Changing the template, will update all objects based on it.

Once an object is translated, it needs to be flagged as localized. While the rules defined in a translation job determine which objects are included in the exported XML, objects that are flagged as localized are not included. When an update is created and a modified object is accepted, this flag is removed until it has been retranslated.

This flag is set automatically when an object is translated via exporting and importing the XML. When localizing an object directly in the Target Library, you need to tell Author-it that it has been translated by flagging it as localized.

To Flag an Object as Localized:

  1. Select the object.
  2. Right-click and choose Localized.
